The Upper Gallery and Back Bay Room have transformed into two distinct solo shows comprised of paintings that capture the grandeur of nature in unique view points and styles. From Beatrice Dauge’s abstract representations of the ocean, to Nicholas Read’s close-up depictions of the unparalleled rocky coastline of Maine, the gallery is full of one-of-a-kind paintings inspired by nature’s splendor that you won’t want to miss!

Beatrice Dauge, CA, Serene, oil on canvas, 40” x 40”

Beatrice Dauge’s solo show, Travel Through Color, is encompassed of paintings created in a vast and bright color palette, capturing the essence of the show title. Many of the abstract artworks represent a familiar force of nature. From seascapes to snowstorms, Travel Through Color effectively takes the viewer on a colorful journey within nature, allowing us to discover a new way to interpret and appreciate our natural surroundings.

Beatrice Dauge, CA, La Mer, oil on canvas, 30” x 40”

In her landscape painting, La Mer, Dauge does not render the painting entirely without representational elements. Her subtle brushstrokes indicate the horizon and the dune itself, and while the color palette is bright, the hues are not far from realistic to the scene. Through her paintings, the artist brings a beautiful new way of observing the natural world.

Nicholas Read, CA, Wet Seaweed, oil, 9” x 11”

Nicholas Read describes the inspiration of Focus: Paintings Along the Maine Coast: “It is, in fact, the ordinary things in life that I am most drawn to. Painting, like all the arts, is about feeling. Camille Corot said “…be guided by feelings alone, abandon yourself to your first impression.” When someone sees a finished painting, and feels the emotion too, the painting finds a home.”

Nicholas Read, CA, Black Head, Monhegan Island, Maine, oil on board, 8” x 30”

In many of the paintings on display at Co|So, Read includes up close renderings of the rocky Maine coastline, detailing the beauty found in areas often overlooked. However, in Black Head, Monhegan Island, Maine, the artist gives the viewer the chance to see what all of the boulders and slabs of slate create in the grand scheme of nature, leaving the viewer awe-inspired just as the artist was.
