Fenway Frenzy and Sparkles Galore!

By admin on April 13, 2017

It’s spring in Boston! And you know what that means: baseball season is finally here! Last week Fenway Park opened its gates for the season, and The Copley Society of Art would like to celebrate one of Boston’s most beloved sports teams with a throwback to some work we have shown in the past.

Jim Connelly, Be Alert, oil on canvas

Jim Connelly is well known for creating works that capture interesting perspectives of views in Boston. His 2012 solo exhibition at the Boston Private in the Prudential Center featured this work as well as other intriguing Fenway perspectives. One of the best parts of going to a baseball game is being able to catch foul balls that fly into the stadium seats, but it can be very painful if you don’t pay attention. As my baseball loving, Boston native, grandfather said, “Be alert, the world needs more lerts.”

Joe Smith, Behind the Green Monster, Scratchboard

As a part of our 2016 Fresh Paint exhibition, Joe Smith created a wonderful scratchboard piece just outside the left field wall of Fenway Park, also known to Bostonians as ‘The Green Monster’. Fenway Park itself is a landmark in Boston and local urban landscape artists love to feature the famous park in their works. We can’t wait to see who brings in the latest representation of the ‘Green Monster’ in our upcoming Fresh Paint Day, on Sunday, April 23.

Richard Sullivan, Big Papi, watercolor

Former professional baseball player Richard Sullivan captures moments of intensity in his watercolor portraits of well known baseball players. David Ortiz, also known as Big Papi, gazes outwards as if he was about to hit one of his famous home runs. Though Big Papi has retired from the Sox, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest players of Boston sports. The Copley Society is pleased to announce that this piece will be shown at our Fresh Paint exhibition and will be available for silent auction.

Deborah Quinn Munson, Extra Bright, pastel and watercolor

Also, we want to give a quick shoutout to Deborah Quinn Munson’s show Sparkle at the Boston Private Bank in the Prudential Center. This show will only be up for a few more weeks, so come on by to the Prudential Center and see these amazing works that truly sparkle and shine.
