Magic Carpet Ride

I work almost entirely with still life because I find it to be the broadest genre; it allows the greatest range of freedom and imagination. It allows many different kinds of paintings as well; sometimes it’s just a pleasing arrangement, sometimes there’s a story line, and other times the paintings have their own internal logic. This is definitely one of the latter. The exotic flavor of the objects, the nearly featureless background, and of course the distortion in the magnifying glass (and the reflection of the glass itself in the large steel marble), give this piece an otherworldly tone.
