Real Tense

I first came to self-portraiture through sculpture. Drawing self-portraits felt like a grounding meditative process of changing my perspective. This drawing is the first in a new series using acrylic markers. Using markers lets me move quickly through each drawing, grounding the work in the moment. This portrait took an afternoon. My work explores control, desire, racial identity, and the moment of my life in which I drew it.
