These Shadows Speak with Us

$3,600.00

This work returns to the imagery hidden in shadows, a representation of the events and history that lies just in the shadows of our identities. This is a painting of a man walking with his shadow depicting historical imagery of the colonization of Latin America, specifically Puerto Rico, and the impact of colonial action on present day traumas such as climate change, political unrest, and violence. This concept pulls at the theme of shared trauma and how colonial history has marked the present day communities at deep and underlying levels that are not always obvious at a first glance. Neo colonial ties are still strong between Caribbean and Latin American countries and the colonizers. If we imagine a past without such pain and blood shed, many issues and dependencies today would look extremely different. The toxic mindset that allows for colonization in the first place has infiltrated and marked many struggles we see today.
