Artist Statement and Bio
Carmela Cattuti

My art is an expression of realism utilizing oil paint and panels. The subject matter ranges from portraiture to Boston landscapes and to still life all executed in a manner that is traditional and feminine. When I begin a new landscape, I spend time observing its subtle moods at different times of day, allowing my memories and emotions to guide my brush as I translate those impressions onto the panel. I choose subject matter and colors to radiate calm and peace, first through a precise drawing, and then a transfer onto the support. I then set out to restructure the image to fit my vision and maintain the integrity of the subject matter.

I strive to convey a sense of order and mastery in my work, yet I am open to introducing unexpected shifts in color or form when it serves my vision. I am particularly inspired and excited by William-Adolpha Bouguereau and his soft feminine atmosphere. In contrast, Artemisia Gentileschi’s bold assertive subject matter and figures inspire me to be adventurous in my work and take risks that support my growth as a painter. I am attracted to John Singer Sargent’s psychological approach to portraits, combining impressionism with realism.

I have painted for forty years, moving from impressionism to realism. I am a graduate of The Academy of Realist Art, Boston painting program, and am currently in the figure drawing program. I intend to continue to grow as a painter, and to produce work that expresses classical techniques with innovative realism.
