Amor Sacro
Made primarily with thick, opaque layers of oil paint, this work is composed of layered, gestural studies of sculptural and two-dimensional works in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. As a place central to the study of classical art, I looked to the Borghese for inspiration after not painting consistently for three years, since the beginning of the pandemic. The coexistence of this well-studied source material with my own anxieties and uncertainties while painting seemed to work well, as it provided balance, structure, and familiarity as I returned to my old practice, colors, gestures, and forms. After my three-year hiatus, it was exciting to see how my instincts and interpretations had changed or remained the same, hence this piece’s relation to emergence. |
