Lucy Kalian
Born in Philadelphia, PA in 1959 to immigrant Armenian parents, Lucy has spent her life creating.
She made her significant leap into traditional, technical drawing and painting at the Grand Central Atelier in NY.
Kalian’s subject matter highlights her creative spirit and her view of human nature. Using drawing, value, and color studies done predominantly from life, she encourages the observer to engage in active conversation with the work.
“There is both a deep yearning and a great exuberance that comes from sharing a moment through personification or lyrical movement. Creating is my life.
It may be a passing thought or observation that encourages deeper investigation. It may be an unraveling of an internal or peripheral knot. Always, a story unfolds. The product constructed is a visual method of recording the journey. The subject exists within the paper, canvas, or panel; my job is to make it visible to other viewers.”
“As a young girl, I would wake early and go into the wooded valley between our home and a local farm. A favorite, fallen tree harbored pencils and paper. Hours were spent wandering, drawing and writing. I awakened most days with a deep sense of yearning and urgency that had to be confronted. Not much has changed. My days begin earlier and I now share my musings.”
