Artist Spotlight: Barney Levitt

In our first ever Artist Window Spotlight, Co|So is proud to highlight Copley Master Barney Levitt’s practice in the front facing windows of the gallery. The works will be on view from June 5th – July 6th.

Barney Levitt has been creating ‘pictures’ ever since he was old enough to grip a crayon and scribble on his parents’ living room walls. He was given his first oil set when he was 10 years old, which set him on the path to becoming a professional artist, eventually graduating with a fine arts degree in drawing and painting.

His work ranges from classical still life set-ups to quirkier narrative pieces that tell a story or invite the viewer to create a narrative of their own, often bridging the gap between the real and surreal.

Just as each of us possess ever-changing moods and feelings, Levitt’s paintings vary in theme from classical ‘old master’ setups to worlds of fantasy and make believe. Humor and narrative are important components in much of his work, where naturalistic detail is combined with quirky offbeat compositions that juxtapose ordinary objects in unexpected ways.
